RemnantSwap is a totally free website that lets fabricators buy and sell countertop remnants without a middleman. Here’s what’s being posted and searched for recently.
What kind of remnants?
There are over 19,000 remnants on RemnantSwap, with an incredible variety of stone, quartz, and solid surface countertop materials being posted. Here’s the breakdown of the types of materials that fabricators have put on the site.
As you can see from the chart, the vast majority is natural stone – granite and marble together make up about 62% of the remnants. Another 22% is quartz – mostly Zodiaq, Silestone, and Hanstone.
What are people looking for?
So, that’s what is being posted. What kind of remnants are people are searching for? This is what I find pretty interesting – it’s really an example of “the long tail“.
On Google, 6% of searches that lead to RemnantSwap are explicitly looking for granite remnants, another 2% are looking for Caesarstone remnants… and then there’s everything else.
“Other” is people looking for just remnants in general plus a huge number of searches for particular colors. The most popular search this month for a specific color was for moonlight quartzite, and even that is less than 1% of the searches.
Even on the search within RemnantSwap, it’s hard to draw conclusions about what materials are in demand. In the last month, Corian and Caesarstone were the most popular searches… but each of those accounted for less than 2% of the search traffic.
The thousand spellings of Calcutta
As I was going through the numbers, I noticed several alternate spellings for colors. I thought this was a fun example of how people spell one granite color name.
I think there might be a showdown between the Calcutta followers, the Calacatta people, and Calacutta true believers. That doesn’t even account for variations like Calcutta Gold or Calcutta Oro…
